Dixie Trail – Highland to St George, Utah

The northern portion follows the entire length of Skyline Drive before connecting with sections of the Paiute Trail, followed by the Fremont Trail system. This is the classic OG Pioneer Trail System trail.

Sample Trip

The trail is long and perfect for adventurers looking for camping opportunities. There are a few hotels along the way, but for the most part, the trail is in the mountains. The team at East of Nowhere Adventures covered the trail in three days, with hotel stops in Salina and Mt. Carmel Junction. Other hotel possibilities are Bryce Canyon City and Kanab. Dispersed camping is available pretty much along the entire route.

Connections

This trail can be combined with a few other trails in the Pioneer Trail System. Since it is a point-to-point route, it’s best to combine it with other routes to make it a loop. The west desert routes of the Union Pacific Trail make a lot of sense and offer a stark difference in terrain from the mountains of the Dixie Trail. The trail to Moab (coming soon!) is another alternate. The trail also has cut-overs to the Expanded 3-to-4 Trail (coming soon!) along with with cut-overs to the Union Pacific Trail.

This trail also intersects the Arapeen Trail and the Paiute Trail systems, along with the Fremont Trail and the Great Western Trail. The possibilities are endless.
